Sclerotherapy Q&A

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins, typically on the legs. It involves injecting a special solution into the affected veins with a needle, causing the vein lining to swell, stick together, and eventually turn into scar tissue.

This process effectively closes off the vein, improving both appearance and comfort. The number of treatments needed varies and is determined during a consultation; often, more than one session is required. Thigh-high compression stockings are recommended post-treatment.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen veins usually appearing on the legs and feet, caused by weak or damaged vein valves. This condition leads to blood pooling rather than flowing efficiently back to the heart, causing veins to stretch and bulge. This condition not only poses cosmetic concerns but can also result in discomfort, fatigue, and pain.

Factors like age, genetics, hormonal changes, and lifestyle contribute to their development. While they're more common in women, men can suffer from them too. The risk increases with age as vein elasticity decreases. Though largely associated with the legs, varicose veins can occur in other body parts as well.
